Viral Diseases in Aquaculture

Abstract
Present paper describes the current situation of aqua-viral diseases in Korea. At least eight viral diseases like infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN), infectious heamatopoietic necrosis (IHN), lymphocystis (iridovirus), marine rhabdovirus infection, epidermal hyperplasis (herpesvirus), marine birnaviral diseases, nodaviral infection and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) were identified as major concern in aquaculture. The presence of viral agent be an economical load through continuous cycle of reoccurrence from its epidemiological characteristics. In addition, newly emerging viral diseases, including recently identified viral agent, can be an unpredictable challenge in near future. Although test and slaughter is the principal measures for the control, effective sanitation and vaccination can be the supplemental measures for aquatic viral diseases, including restriction of movement and quarantine policy. Therefore, the characteristics of viral diseases in aquaculture require not only a monitoring, but an extensive surveillance and research for the efficient control in future.
